Any adjustments to the schedule which become necessary will be made by the instructor and students will  be notified by email. You are required to keep in touch with your instructor by email and IM during the entire week.

Monday

Journal Writing - assigned at the beginning of every class and due immediately by email. Submit these to [email protected] as attachments from Word.

Journal - Describe the most colorful member of your family  - outside of your immediate family - using stories which demonstrate how you see this person.

  1. Intro to class.
  2. Set up IM identities
  3. Go over syllabus
  4. Break down into groups - if necessary.
  5. Make assignments as to who will interview whom during the week.
  6. Go over preparations and techniques for conducting a taped interview.
  7. Discuss the types of questions which should be asked during the interviews.
  8. Discuss the two parts to the interview - personal and professional.
  9. Schedule the first interviews. Schedule a 20 - 25 minute block for your interviews.
  10. Begin preparing the type questions you intend to ask. Type these out and present your subject with a copy before you begin the interview. This will allow the subject to know what direction you hope to take the interview. Make the subject understand that you are not bound by the questions...they are only a guide.
  11. REMEMBER TO SUBMIT a half page reaction to the interview experience and your initial opinion of the interview - WITH EVERY INTERVIEW.

Monday Study Time

Practice interviewing techniques by conducting a short interview of one of your classmates. Then practice transcribing the interview. This is what you will do for each person you are assigned to interview. Spend any left over time - if you have any - developing questions for you interviews.

Tuesday

Journal - What is the most outrageous tale a member of your family has ever told? Try to tell the story in the same manner the person told it - in order to make it more realistic. Be very descriptive as you tell the story. Submit.

  1. Complete the journal assignment and submit to the instructor.
  2. Finish scheduling your interviews. No interview should be scheduled later than Thursday morning.
  3. You must email your interview schedule to your instructor as you know it. As you complete the transcription of your interviews, you are to share the transcript with the person you interviewed. Make sure they said what they meant to say. Make any corrections necessary to the transcript and then submit it to the instructor via email.
  4. DO NOT ERASE OR TAPE OVER YOUR INTERVIEWS!!! All cassettes from the interviews MUST BE LABELED AND TURNED IN!!

Tuesday Study Time

Spend this time transcribing tapes and preparing for your next interview. Submit your questions to me prior to the interview whenever possible. This way I can preview your questions and make suggestions whenever necessary.

Wednesday

Journal - When have you been the most embarrassed? Describe the circumstances and what was so embarrassing about it. Submit.

Log on to IM

After you finish your journal assignment, you are to work on your interview questions, reactions and transcripts. Your focus should be on completing your interviews and reactions. You are to check in with your instructor by email or IM to be sure you are progressing at an acceptable pace.

Wednesday Study Time

Spend this time transcribing tapes and preparing for your next interview. Submit your questions to me prior to the interview whenever possible. This way I can preview your questions and make suggestions whenever necessary.

Thursday

Journal - Describe your fondest memory, whether of a person, place, pet, etc in your life so far.

After you finish your journal assignment, you are to work on your interview questions, reactions and transcripts. Your focus should be on completing your interviews and reactions. You are to check in with your instructor by email or IM to be sure you are progressing at an acceptable pace.

Thursday Study Time

Transcribe - transcribe - transcribe

Friday

Journal - Think about a story or tradition that has been passed down through your family as tradition. Describe this in great detail.

It is very important that you have completed all of your interviews and transcriptions by the end of this class. you should have made all you last minute contacts and changes to your transcripts. All of your transcripts should be submitted by the end of this class and your cassettes should be labeled and turned in to your onsite assistant - Ashley.
